Bhagava means the Blessed One or the Exalted One. He is called so for He came to the end of the fulfillment of thirty perfections (samatiMsapArami). With the fulfillment this perfection he became the Buddha.
These nine qualities of the Enlightened One made Him a convincing individuality to both ordained and lay disciples to accept Him as the teacher. With these nine qualities, the Buddha was famous in that particular society where many claimed themselves to be the Buddha. With trustworthy character, He was able to make His teachings the most popular practice of the day within a time of two decades He replaced the position of Brahmanism as the major religion of Jambudīpa with His teaching, Buddhism.
